1. Is mental performance coaching only for high level and adult athletes?
It’s true that numerous collegiate, professional, elite and Olympic level athletes work with a sport psychology professional. However, it’s a misconception that mental coaching is valuable only to high level athletes. Recreational and competitive athletes of all ages, ability levels, and sports can benefit.
Younger athletes will find that growing their mental skills as they grow their physical skills will help them progress more quickly. All athletes who take their sport seriously and who aspire to reach their ultimate potential will find that mental skills work can make competing more fun and more successful.
2. I’m performing well. Why do I need a mental coach?
Mental performance coaching is about education and building a tool box of sport psychology skills and strategies to help the athlete excel in their sport. Even the successful athlete can learn about and apply skills that will enhance their mindset and performance.
3. Does working with a mental coach mean there’s something wrong with me?
While you might be experiencing a mental block, a lack of confidence, competition anxiety, or any other number of challenges, there’s nothing wrong with you. You’re just facing difficulties all athletes go through during their career. Choosing to work with an MPC is a smart decision that shows your commitment to doing everything possible to reach your goals. And by the way, a mental performance coach can be your secret weapon!
4. Is mental performance coaching only for athletes?
Absolutely not! Mental skills are beneficial for performers and professionals of all kinds. I’ve worked with fire fighters, lawyers, medical professionals, musicians, actors, public speakers and corporate organizations.
5. Do you attend practices or competitions?
Yes, with permission of the athlete. It’s helpful to see the athlete/team in action. And, I really enjoy getting to see my athletes perform!
6. Will you be talking with any of my coaches?
Only with your knowledge and permission.
7. Do you meet in person or virtually?
In person meetings are preferred when possible. To accommodate my athletes busy schedules, I’ve created a “mobile practice” and meet athletes in a comfortable public location or a library study room convenient to us both. When an athlete is traveling, lives in another state, or has scheduling conflicts phone or video conferencing is available.
8. What should I expect at the first session?
The initial session will be:
- An opportunity to get to know each other and make sure everyone feels comfortable with the relationship
- To provide the athlete with an introduction to mental performance coaching and what they can expect from future sessions
- For the athlete to share their expectations, goals, and what they hope to achieve from the coaching.
- A first “tool” for your mental tool box and an action step to make it part of your training.
9. How long does a session last?
Generally 50 minutes to an hour, with some flexibility if we’re getting great work done.
10. Do you require a contract and a certain number of sessions?
Following the first session, if you choose to continue with coaching, you will be asked to commit to a minimum of four sessions in the next four months. This gives me an ample opportunity to show you what kind of impact we can make on your mental toughness and performance. It also demonstrates your commitment to and respect for the process. After completing your four sessions, it’s your decision how you’d like to continue.
11. How much is a session and what form of payment do you take?
Session rates are variable depending on length, location, in person vs. virtual, and possible financial need. We will discuss your situation and rate prior to our first meeting.
Payment in full is expected at the time of our session via cash, check, Venmo and PayPal. I do not accept insurance.
